It’s all eyes on New York this week as the Frieze art fair once again seizes the attention of the art world. Opening for its sixth edition in the Big Apple this Friday (5 -7 May, Randall’s Park Island), it includes over 200 of the world’s leading galleries for modern and contemporary art. New this year is a symposium (5 May) in collaboration with the Getty and the Institute of Fine Arts which will examine questions relating to Latin American art and culture, reflecting the more pronounced international focus of this year’s event.
While Frieze has always been a magnet for art lovers, there is now a plethora of other reasons to visit New York, as no less than fourteen other art fairs, as well as numerous exhibitions and art events, take over the city in the early weeks of May. Many eyes will be watching with interest as TEFAF launch their inaugural spring show in New York (4-8 May, Park Avenue Armory). Following the successful launch of TEFAF New York in October last year, the organisers have introduced a May event concentrated on Modern and Contemporary art, with a small number of antiquities, African and Oceanic art and jewellery dealers also included to appeal to crossover buyers. As well as the impressive array of works on show, both events hope to lure visitors with a programme of talks, symposiums and events.
If one bite of the Big Apple isn’t enough, you needn’t stay hungry for long; the major spring auctions of Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art take place in the week commencing 15 May.
